I’m enjoying a freshly brewed filter coffee while relaxing on the balcony of my opulent suite. Staring back at me are thick forests and a far-off view of the Kodaikanal hills. After an unexpected shower, the fresh scent of petrichor and the chattering of birds fill the rest of my senses with excitement. Fog breaks sometimes, bringing a subtle blur to the view. I’m not whiny, though. Actually, I’m loving the chilly weather. Grasping my shawl snugly, I inhale the crisp air, enter my colonial-style room, and venture outside to relish the scenic splendor of The Tamara Kodai.
House of History

Situated almost 6,500 feet above sea level, this opulent hotel has a rich history and skillfully combines the old and new. Originally known as Baynes Bungalow, the house was one of the first few constructed in the area and belonged to Mr. Baynes, a British District Judge. It dates back to the 1840s. In 1860, Father Louis Cyr purchased the cottage and transformed it into La Providence, the hotel’s current all-day dining establishment.

The magnificent structure served as a retreat for Nagapattinam’s priests. Indeed, the cobblestone walls from that era may still be seen at this Bistro 1845. In addition to being the perfect location for enthusiasts of all things retro and traditional, With lots of greenery all around, the Tamara Kodai is the ideal place to get away from the daily grind.
The magic of beauty
The large property will certainly keep you busy. If you’re brave enough to brave the cold straight after you step outside, you can swim in the temperature-controlled pool, play indoor games like snooker or table tennis, or take a stroll around the verdant surroundings. For those who enjoy the great outdoors, the resort staff also plans outdoor activities. Go on a hike through the Kodai Lake’s neck of the woods, then consider taking a quick boat ride.

The resort can plan an excursion to Munnar Lake so you can cycle around the body of water, weather permitting. To experience the breathtaking view of the hills covered in clouds, it is highly recommended to travel to Vattakanal View Point, which is around 3.5 km from the hotel. Naturally, since you also enjoy freshly cooked corn that has been roasted. On your route back to the resort, you’ll pass by the picturesque Vattakanal waterfalls, which is a hotspot for biodiversity.
Slowing it down

If you’re already thinking lamenting your hike-related leg aches, relax. Since the resort’s on-site Elevation Spa is intended to provide you with some much-needed pampering. After your treatment, whether it be Swedish or Ayurvedic, you’ll get to enjoy a ten-minute sauna. Talk about the cherry on top!
Taste of the south
The chefs at The Tamara Kodai ensure that you forego the need to step outside the resort for meals. Besides the lavish buffet at La Providence and extensive multi-cuisine menu at Bistro 1845 mentioned earlier, we looked for a taste of local food. Executive Chef Nitish Chandra Phani and his team took our wish extremely seriously, and we found ourselves being served traditional South Indian fare.

Our breakfast included dishes ranging from Karra Pannayaram to Puttu Kadala Curry with a side of local Kodai fruits; Lunch and dinner packed a punch with spicy and tangy flavour bombs. My favourite dishes include, Kadai (quail) Sukka, Tandoori Pistachio Salmon, Curd Rice served in a Passionfruit, Tomato Rasam, Pandi Pepper Fry with Roti, Vanjaram Pollichathu (a steamed fish preparation), and the restaurant’s signature Beetroot Kofta Curry with Kulcha. Pair your meals with delectable cocktails and end on a sweet note with an array of dessert options ranging from Pal Payasam to White Choco Cheese Cake.
